Special Education Students Embraced at Tutors on Wheels

Although there has been a significant effort to increase the number of programs for children with special needs, the quality of these programs varies greatly from school to school, and even from year to year. While more children who have mild learning disabilities are adequately served in schools, children with moderate to severe disabilities still encounter major challenges. The staff at Tutors on Wheels understand this problem and offer support through therapeutic specialists who provide the requirements of special needs children.

Special education teachers work with children and youths who have a variety of disabilities. A small number of them work with students with mental retardation or autism, primarily teaching them life skills and basic literacy. However, the majority of special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the children's individual needs.

Most special education teachers instruct students at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level, although some may work with infants and toddlers. The various types of disabilities that qualify individuals for our special education programs include specific learning disabilities, language impairments, and autism.

Early identification of a child with special needs is an important part of a special education teacher's job, and early intervention is essential in educating children with disabilities. They use various techniques to promote learning.

Depending on the disability, teaching methods can include individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work. Their goal is to improve the students' skills so they meet the state learning standards. This may include guidance, counseling, and study skills needed to improve academic performance. All students must be prepared for the NYC (ELA and Math) examinations, including Regents Preparation for high school students.

Teachers have received training and professional development that enhance classroom practice and boost student learning. Founded on a philosophy that the student comes first, Tutors on Wheels offers one-on-one instruction and group classes.
