The Jump-Start Program

Tutors on Wheels is excited to announce the start of its brand new Jump-Start Program! As educators, we are well aware of the "summer slide" that students face due to two months of academic inactivity. Here are some statistics demonstrating the negative effects of the "summer slide" on your children according to the following article in U.S. News:

  • Summer learning loss in the 9th grade accounts for 66% of the achievement gap in reading

  • Children who are given access to books and resources over the summer perform 35-40% better on reading tests than those without access to books

  • Due to a lack of practice at home, students on average lose 2.6 months of mathematical computation over the summer months

  • In mathematics, 17% of the new school year is spent reteaching material that was forgotten over the summer

  • During summer vacation, 2-3 hours a week of academic instruction is needed to avoid learning loss

The objective of our Jump-Start Program is to help students in grades 3-8 avoid the notorious "summer slide" while also getting a "Jump-Start" on the following school year's curriculum. Here are some of the ameneties that will be offered to both parents and students through our Jump-Start summer program:

  • Classes will be held three mornings a week in the subjects of math, reading, and writing (two hours per class)

  • Students will be provided with Common Core aligned workbooks in math and ELA from an accredited educational publisher

  • Experienced, compassionate teachers who are familiar with the Common Core and have mastered the subject material they are responsible for teaching

  • Frequent in-class assessments and progress reports to keep parents updated on their child's academic progress

  • Daily homework assignments for students to reinforce what they have learned in class that day
